Accessibility
World Book Online Reference Center aims to provide maximum accessibility for all users. Part of this is work to ensure compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Another part is to ensure that the Online Reference Center content and design can be accessed equally by users of most ages, locations, and origins.
This Accessibility feature is designed to provide information on World Book accessibility, and to explain how some users can adapt the Reference Center to meet their individual accessibility needs. For example, some users may prefer to see spellings, usage, and content presented in a form that is familiar for users of British (or International) English. Others may find that accessibility can be improved by changes in the screen display such as enlarging the size of the text.
Accessibility Statement
World Book Online Reference Center has been adapted for maximum accessibility. This accessibility work was based on the Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) of the World Wide Web Consortium. WAI is supported in part by: the U.S. Department of Education's National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research; European Commission's Information Society Technologies Programme; and Canada's Assistive Devices Industry Office.
World Book Online Reference Center has been modified to meet all of the priority one guidelines of the WAI, and most of the priority two and priority three guidelines. Work is continuing to meet lower priority guidelines.
The requirements of the United States Rehabilitation Act, Section 508, are the basis for Federal government regulations that require that information technology procured, maintained, or used by the Federal government be accessible to people with disabilities.
Further information on the guidelines is available at:
http://www.access-board.gov/sec508/guide/1194.22.htm
Certification of compliance. The World Book Online Reference Center (WBORC) has been tested and certified as Section 508 compliant using Bobby ™ software from Watchfire.
Some separate sites linked from World Book Online Reference Center have not yet been made compliant with accessibility guidelines or regulations. These are the third-party Web sites linked from within WBORC; World Book Research Libraries; Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos; some Features of the Month; Surf the Ages; and Student Resources.
Testing accessibility. In addition, World Book staff also conducted accessibility tests with blind students. Additional tests were carried out with students without disability to provide a control to ensure equal accessibility for all. Usability and accessibility testing is an ongoing activity.
Enlarging the size of text
You can make the text, or font, appear larger if this makes it easier for you to read. The way of changing text size varies according to the browser you are using. To change the text size, look for your browser and version number in the list below, and follow the steps given underneath your browser name.
Note: if you visit other Web sites after you have enlarged the text size, then the other sites will also show a larger size of text. You can reduce the text size by following the procedure for changing the type size, and choosing the option to make the text smaller
Other browser versions may have different ways of changing text size, or may not have the facility to change it. If you have an older browser, use the browser Help file to find out more information.
