McNary, Charles Linza,  «muhk NAIR ih, charlz LIHN zuh» (1874-1944), served as a United States senator from Oregon from 1917 until his death. He was the Republican candidate for vice president in 1940. He and presidential candidate Wendell L. Willkie lost to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Henry A. Wallace. A liberal Republican, McNary supported federal aid to farmers during the 1920's and many New Deal programs in the 1930's (see New Deal). He served as Senate minority leader from 1932 until his death on Feb. 25, 1944. He was born near Salem, Oregon, on June 12, 1874, and he attended Stanford University.
